Jose “Chris” Ocampo practices as part of Riley Pope & Laney’s government liability defense team. He joined Riley Pope & Laney in November 2025 after years of focusing on business planning, estate planning, probate litigation, and family law litigation.

Chris is a member of the South Carolina Bar and a member of the Richland and Lexington County Bar Associations. Chris is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Chris grew up in southeast Georgia and received this Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Georgia Southern University in 2013. After his graduation, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he lived and worked as a civil engineering technician until he moved to Columbia in 2019 to start his legal education at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Chris has previously served as the Technology Editor for the American Bar Association’s Real Property, Trust & Estate Journal, volunteered as a Spanish interpreter for the USC School of Law’s Domestic Violence Clinic, and worked as a Student-Attorney for the USC School of Law’s Non-profit Organization Clinic. As of recent, Chris has been featured in SC Lawyer magazine for his volunteer work at the Richland County Housing Court.

Chris resides in West Columbia, South Carolina and is a member of the Cayce-West Columbia Rotary Club.
